    Additional Information

Reason for taking up this sport
He always preferred winter sports because he likes cold temperatures. He was also fascinated by the high speed and challenges that skiing provided. (nordica.com, 25 May 2009)

    Training
He does special warm-up exercises in the morning and gymnastic exercises in the evening to help cope with persistent back problems. (skionline.ch, 03 Dec 2011)

    Most memorable sporting achievement
Winning the super G at the 2011 World Cup event in Beaver Creek, CO, United States. (helvetia.com, 12 Nov 2012)

    Sporting philosophy / motto
"Only remember the successes." (sandroviletta.ch, 11 Mar 2011)

    General
    FEAR OF FLYING
He has a fear of flying which developed following the terrorist attacks in New York, NY, United States, on 11 September 2001. "Long flights for me are agony. I will only do them for professional reasons if there are no alternatives. It bothers me so much I will be pretty restless for two days before a flight. The strain on my body because of the fear can last for days after a flight. In the past I have flown to Argentina four days before the rest of the team to allow for time to recover." He has used acupuncture treatment to help reduce the stress he experiences. (skionline.ch, 06 Dec 2011; blick.ch, 15 Aug 2010)

    NEAR MISS
In February 2013 he had a near miss with a ski marshal at the world championships in Schladming, Austria. On his downhill run, he had just gone over a jump when a marshal crossed the track narrowly avoiding a collision. "At the time I did not think it was a problem, but when I saw the pictures afterwards I was surprised how close it was." International Ski Federation [FIS] race director Gunter Hujara apologised to Viletta after the incident and praised him for not complaining about his time being compromised. (srf.ch, 11 Feb 2013)
