    • Injuries: In 2011 he injured his shoulder after falling in training, which he attributed to not having sharp blades on his skates. The injury meant he could not practice any lifts, but he continued to compete in the hope it would repair properly. Eventually, after a fall during competition in Bratislava, Slovakia, he suffered a partial tear to his groin muscle, an injury he believes was caused by the stress on his body of compensating for the lack of strength in his shoulder. (winter.sport-express.ru, 12 Dec 2011)

During the free skate at the 2008 World Championships he suffered from swelling in his right arm and had trouble performing the lifts. After a short medical break he and partner Maria Mukhortova finished their routine, finishing in seventh place. (Golden Skate, 30 Jun 2008)

He began skating in 1987 in Perm, Russia. (fskate.ru, 27 Nov 2013)

Reason for taking up this sport
His elder brother saw an open invitation to a figure skating club. At first, he was not especially eager to do figure skating but his parents, former athletes themselves, encouraged him to take up a sports career. (rg.ru, 29 Apr 2011)

    Ambitions
To win Olympic gold. (newizv.ru, 18 Mar 2013)

    Training
Along with skating partner Tatiana Volosozhar, he trains 40 hours a week in the low season, dividing his training time between Hackensack, NJ, United States, Moscow and Sochi, both in Russia. During the high season they train 28 hours a week in Moscow and Sochi. (ISU, 01 Dec 2013)

    Most memorable sporting achievement
Winning pairs gold with Maria Mukhortova at the 2005 World Junior Championships in Kitchener, ON, Canada. (sport-express.ru, 21 Mar 2013)

    Awards
He holds the title of Honoured Master of Sport in Russia. (fsrussia.ru, 16 May 2013)

    General
    PARTNERSHIP
His skating partner is Tatiana Volosozhar. They teamed up for the first time at the beginning of the 2010/11 season, after Trankov had previously competed with Maria Mukhortova between 2003 and 2010, and Natalia Shestakova in the early part of his career. (ISU, 08 Nov 2012; fskating.com, 27 Dec 2010)

    FATHER DEDICATION
His father died shortly before the 2013 European Championships in Zagreb, Croatia. He dedicated his victory at the championships to his father. "It was not easy, but I knew that we would win. That's what my father wanted. Before competitions, he was telling us 'You'll win, you'll win' and that's happened. I got a feeling, as if my father from somewhere up there, in heaven, was watching how I performed. I was confident about winning, I could not afford to not win." (perm.kp.ru, 26 Jan 2013)

    WINNING FOR PARTNER
He says only one victory during his career has given him a genuine sense of euphoria, his gold in the pairs at the 2005 World Junior Championships in Kitchener, ON, Canada. He has said that he is now motivated more by achieving success for skating partner Tatiana Volosozhar than for himself. "Normally I've got just one thought after winning - these are victories that Tatiana needs. So I am skating for her. To make her dream come true. I like winning for her." (sport-express.ru, 21 Mar 2013)

    TOUGH START
He moved from Perm to St Petersburg at age 15, in search of a new skating partner. With no money to rent an apartment, he spent his first three years in St Petersburg living in his coaches' spare rooms and sometimes with soldiers who used to live underneath the tribunes of the SKA rink where he trained. (Golden Skate, 30 Jun 2008)
