Additional Information
Start of sporting careerHe took up biathlon at age 10. (ladepeche.fr, 13 Feb 2012)
Reason for taking up this sportHe tried numerous sports including ice hockey, judo, swimming, athletics and mountain biking, before taking up Nordic skiing and then biathlon after his brother Simon started. "I wanted to be like my older brother." (martinfourcade.fr, 21 Mar 2012)
AmbitionsTo win gold at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. (martinfourcade.fr, 21 Mar 2012)
Most memorable sporting achievementWinning the 2011/12 overall World Cup title. (martinfourcade.fr, 21 Mar 2012)
HeroUS swimmer Michael Phelps, Moroccan distance runner Hicham El Guerrouj, French rugby player Francois Trinh-Duc, Spanish ski mountaineer Kilian Jornet, and French slalom paddler Tony Estanguet. (martinfourcade.fr, 21 Mar 2012)
Superstitions / RitualsHe tries not to prepare differently for particular events. "I try to keep things feeling natural. I have certain rituals, but I've done biathlon since I was 10 years old. I know how everything works, I shoot every day, it's like it's a part of my DNA." (ladepeche.fr, 13 Feb 2012)
Sporting philosophy / motto"Suffering is a daily thing, one must be a masochist to train as I do. Training means a year of suffering for one day of happiness, in the search for the ultimate level of perfection. So I have always done what is necessary. Behind the starting line, whatever you haven't done, you are surely going to pay for." (fourcadebrothers.fr, 21 Jul 2009)
GeneralMOVING TO NORWAY IN 2014
He announced in January 2013 his intention to move to Oslo, Norway, for a minimum of two years at the end of the 2014 European winter. "I love it when I'm in Norway, and I think I will move there after the Olympic Games in Sochi. It will be good to have some change in my life, it will reinvigorate my training and career. I think in fact it is a necessary more in order to remain at the top of my sport for another few years." (ski-nordique.net, 19 Jan 2013)
APPRECIATING SILVER
He won a silver medal at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in the mass start and finished 35th in the sprint, which he cites as one of the most frustrating moments of his career. However, after winning silver behind rival Emil Hegle Svendsen in a photo finish in the 12.5km pursuit at the 2013 World Championships in Nove Mesto na Morave, Czech Republic, he developed a more philosophical approach to coming second. "Sandrine Bailly [French Olympic biathlon medallist] sent me a message the other day, 'if one cannot appreciate a silver medal, one does not deserve gold'. It is somewhat true. My biggest frustration is still the Olympic Games in Vancouver, hopefully this will change after Sochi." (ladepeche.fr, 13 Feb 2013)
SIBLING SUCCESS
In January 2012 he finished third in the sprint at the World Cup event in Nove Mesto na Morave, Czech Republic. His brother Simon finished second in the event, and the pair became the first brothers to make the podium of a World Cup biathlon event. (biathlonworld.com, 17 Jan 2012)
