Additional Information
Start of sporting careerGrowing up she did not ski a lot, as she was focused on playing ice hockey. She became interested in freestyle skiing in 2001 when she moved to Colorado, United States, to attend the University of Denver. (usfreeskiing.com, 15 Apr 2013)
Reason for taking up this sportDuring her junior year at university she spent time in Australia through a study abroad programme and had a continuous year of summer. She was tired of the heat, so after her return to the United States, she spent more and more time in the mountains and became interested in skiing. "Skiing instantly filled a void in my life." AmbitionsTo win gold at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. (LinkedIn profile, 14 Aug 2013)
TrainingShe skis up to six days a week and goes to the gym four days a week. She does not like to consider training as work, and tries to remember that skiing is fun. In addition to the ski specific training she does, she also goes cycling, running and plays tennis. (examiner.com, 19 Jan 2013; yahoo.com, 25 Sep 2012)
HeroCanadian ice hockey goaltender Manon Rheaume, Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke. (examiner.com, 19 Sep 2012)
Superstitions / RitualsShe paints her nails the night before a competition as it helps keep her calm. She also likes to sit by herself for at least an hour before an event, focusing on the details of her run. "The more I visualise the things I need to do, the easier it is for me to perform under pressure." (kekbfm.com, 17 Jan 2013; examiner.com, 19 Sep 2012)
GeneralVIDEO DIARY
Alongside teammates Grete Eliassen and Megan Olenick she is part of a video project in which the skiers are filmed going about their daily lives. The project gives fans an opportunity to follow the trio as they travel the globe on the competitive ski tour. Viewers can see footage of competitions, film shoots, back country skiing, commercial shoots, POV footage, interviews, training and day-to-day aspects of the skiers' lives. THE MENTAL CHALLENGE
One of the most difficult things in her sport is staying focused, and she admits the death of Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke in January 2012 had a huge impact on her. "My greatest challenge had been conquering my mental side. Last season was really rough with the death of Sarah Burke along with a bunch of personal injuries and friends getting seriously injured. It had been a huge struggle for me to keep my mind clear and focused." (yahoo.com, 25 Sep 2012)
VIDEO CAT
In 2011 she rescued and adopted a cat from the side of the road. She named it Charlie and the animal frequently stars in her skiing videos. "I rescued a kitten from a ditch on the side of the road in Oregon. She was almost dead, and I saved her life. We have totally bonded, she travels with me when there is a destination I can drive to, and she has already been to 10 different states. I have also been teaching her tricks. She can sit, shake, stand up and high five, so I call her the puppycat." (yahoo.com, 25 Sep 2012)
