Additional Information
Start of sporting careerShe began skiing at age four in Perisher, NSW, Australia. She was an alpine skier for 14 years before taking up freestyle in 2005 in Switzerland. (Facebook page, 26 Jan 2014)
Reason for taking up this sportIn January 2003 she retired from alpine skiing due to a lack of funding. She worked full-time for 18 months before deciding to continue her skiing career. She opted to return to ski cross rather than alpine skiing. "I wasn't getting any younger so I wanted to try my luck at the more extreme side to skiing." (jennyowens.com, 21 Sep 2013)
Most memorable sporting achievementWinning bronze at the 2012 Winter X Games in Aspen, CO, United States, achieving four World Cup podium finishes and placing fifth at the 2011 World Championships in Park City, UT, United States. (olympics.com.au, 30 Sep 2013)
Sporting philosophy / motto"When you aim for the extraordinary, learn to accept that you are going to make mistakes and frequently experience moments of setback, loss and frustration. The road to greatness is paved with stones of failure and disappointment." (NOC, 27 Jan 2010)
AwardsShe was named Australian Junior Skier of the Year in 1998. (OWIA, 17 Jan 2002)
GeneralTIME AWAY FROM THE SPORT
She chose to finish the 2012/13 season early to begin working with a sports psychologist. This was to help her deal with pressure of competing more effectively. "I am working on my mental game as that seems to be where most of my troubles have come from over the past years." (olympics.com.au, 17 Jul 2013)
OTHER ACTIVITIES
She has served as a member of the Australian Athletes' Commission, and backed the partial ban on social media set by the Australian Olympic Committee [AOC]. The ban was a result of what the AOC saw as unnecessary distractions in the lead-up to the 2012 Olympic Games in London. "It's trying to do the best thing for the athletes. I don't think the AOC is trying to stop athletes keeping their fans or friends up to date." (ninemsn.com.au, 10 Jan 2014)
TATTOOS
She has the logo from the 2002 Olympic Winter Games tattooed on her lower back and the logo from the 2010 Games in Vancouver on her foot. (olympics.com.au, 22 May 2013)
