GeneralCANCER
At age three he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and had seven years of chemotherapy. During his recovery he also had a stroke and went into remission. Despite the diagnosis, which gave him around a 15% chance of survival, his mother allowed him to take up ski jumping at age four. "She knew I loved the outdoors, and I loved doing that kind of thing. It kind of kept my mind off the chemo, the doctors, the treatments. At that point, I didn't have a very great life expectancy, so she just figured, 'Let him do what he wants to do'." (deseretnews.com, 10 Mar 2012)
CHARITY WORK
He has organised several events to help raise money for cancer charities. In 2009 he helped to organise a five kilometre run which raised over USD 17,000 for the Rocky Mountain Candlelighters for Childhood Cancer charity. He also regularly participates in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team Training project, which involves people raising money through competing in races around the United States. For the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi he teamed up with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in Utah to select two children to design artwork on his helmet. OLYMPIC EXPERIENCE
He was a forejumper, a volunteer who jumps prior to competition to test the conditions, at the 2002 and 2010 Olympic Winter Games. (teamusa.org, 08 Oct 2013)
CHANGE OF FOCUS
He believes the time he spent as a forejumper and spectator at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver helped him realise that he needed to shift his focus if he wanted to improve his results. "During that month, I realised I was going in the totally opposite direction of the sport. I had clearly sacrificed my jumps for the cross-country side. I [had] focused on trying to get faster, thinking: it doesn't matter how good or bad I jumped - as long as I was close, I could make up the deficit in the ski. After [Vancouver], I realised I needed to focus more on the jumping side." In an effort to improve his jumping he lost 10kg between April and November 2010. (teamusa.org, 08 Oct 2013)
