Reason for taking up this sportHer father took her skating on a local frozen lake after she was inspired by watching Ingo Steuer, who would become her coach, skating on TV. "I saw skating on television and was fascinated by it. I didn't do any other sports but I wanted to try figure skating. I started pairs when I was 13 years old. I saw the other skaters doing it and I wanted to do it myself. I liked all the acrobatic things like lifts and twists and throws." Her regular skating partner is Robin Szolkowy. They teamed up in 2003. Previously she had skated with Stanislav Morozov, whom she won gold with at the 2000 Junior World Championships in Oberstdorf, Germany, and Dmitri Boenko. (ISU, 23 Sep 2013)
NATIONAL FIRSTS
Her and Szolkowy's bronze medal in the pairs at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver was the first Olympic medal by a German skater for 12 years. They also became the first German skaters to win a world title in 11 years when they won the pairs in 2008. (ISU, 23 Sep 2013)
FROM UKRAINE TO GERMANY
