Reason for taking up this sport

RECORD OLYMPIC APPEARANCE
The 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi will be the seventh winter Games he has competed at, a record for an athlete at the Olympic Winter Games. Japanese ski jumper Noriaki Kasai will also compete in his seventh Games in Sochi. (rsport.ru, 05 Jan 2014)

PSYCHOLOGICAL ADVANTAGE
After he began working with psychologist Vasily Korneyev, he won silver at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin and finished first in the overall standings for the 2006 World Cup. He continued to work with Korneyev, although he did not put his success down to one specific thing. "I'm not sure if it was due to psychological experiments, new training or a combination of both."
